April Fool’s Day- Friday Rambling- Week 12

This day is just another example of how the human race often “celebrates” a day for no reason. If you don’t believe me, look it up. No one definitively knows where it originated.

One, huge stretch-of-a-story out there in the ether is that the day commemorates when Noah first sent the dove out to check if the flood waters had cleared and if the bird could land. It couldn’t. But even so, how did that become a day where we lie or trick people? It certainly can’t be proven that the event even took place in April.

Utter hogwash.

There’s a hypothesis about Chaucer’s Canterbury tales or possible origins when a nobleman sent servants to complete ridiculous errands. My favorite guess is that, back in the day, the first of the month had significance, often having a name or title associated with it, such as “May Day” or “New Year’s Day.”

We do the same type of thing now with months and even individual days. Of the over 30 titles associated with April, here are some of the more ridiculous ones that we’ve bestowed: National Straw Hat Month, National Canine Fitness Month, Fresh Celery Month, National Welding Month, and National Safe Digging Month. (My apologies to the welders out there but, in fairness, did you even know this was your month)?

Just to pile on with this logic, did you know that today, April 2nd, is “National Ferret Day” and “Love Your Produce Manager Day?” I’m not sure what to do with either of those…how does one celebrate these monumental (sarcasm) days in history?

The truth is, we have no idea how April 1st started, but because it might be an opportunity to ridicule or make someone else feel or look foolish- we keep it around. We have torn down historical statues in this country, removed anything remotely Biblical from some of our towns or buildings and argued over politics or social justice like asses.

I’m not even sure we need an official April Fool’s Day, it seems we celebrate this day a lot.

Have a blessed Good Friday! A day where I know the origins…a day that’s truly special to me and a day that I can celebrate!

Love you, friends!! ❤ Have a wonderful Easter weekend.

  1. I don’t even know why we have April fools. Most of the time they make up these holidays for making money. There’s just too much hypocrisy in this world. They say one things OK but another isn’t. Love you.
